Magrabi Health has announced the adoption of advanced artificial intelligence tools designed to improve early detection of diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of vision loss among diabetic patients in the Kingdom. This initiative aims to enhance preventive care and expand community outreach efforts nationwide.
Dr. Adel ِAL Akeely, Retina Surgeon and Medical Director at Magrabi Health in Riyadh, emphasized that diabetic retinopathy remains a major health challenge in Saudi Arabia, driven primarily by uncontrolled metabolic factors such as elevated glucose levels, hypertension, and high lipid profiles. He added that long-standing diabetes, obesity, kidney disease, smoking, and pregnancy further increase the risk, making early and repeated retinal screening essential.
Dr. AL Akeely highlighted a significant awareness gap, noting that many patients continue to present with advanced stages of the disease despite being aware of their diabetes. Misconceptions—such as associating vision fluctuations solely with temporary glucose changes—cause patients to underestimate the silent, cumulative retinal damage. He stressed that optical-shop checks are not substitutes for comprehensive examinations by ophthalmology specialists.
To address these challenges, Magrabi Health is expanding the use of AI-driven retinal screening, enabling earlier detection, faster referrals, and greater patient accessibility across both clinical and community settings.
The organization is also developing the innovative “Health Capsule”, which will offer basic health measurements along with retinal imaging to reach individuals who rarely visit specialty clinics.
Magrabi Health continues to strengthen its leadership in diabetic eye care through a multi-pillar strategy that integrates technology, research, medical training, and community awareness. Through these efforts, the organization reaffirms its mission to safeguard vision and enhance preventive eye care throughout the Kingdom.
